Attitude. Alignment. Action.

After I had been teaching yoga full-time for about seven years it became obvious that I needed to expand my knowledge. When students told me about discomfort, pain or injuries, I did not know how to help them. I started looking for advanced education for yoga teachers.

In that time of searching, a new student asked me if I had studied Anusara Yoga. My classes reminded her o f a particular method she had come to know while living in the US. She said that she noticed she always made the most progress in Anusara classes. I became curious.

Later that same year (2005) the founder of Anusara Yoga, John Friend, was giving a workshop in Berlin. I attended with great interest and walked out feeling amazing: I felt more balanced and revitalised than I had after any other practice in a long time.

The philosophy, alignment principles and teaching methodology of Anusara Yoga captured my heart and took my practice to a new level.

The outstanding curriculum created by the Anusara School of Hatha Yoga is included in my 200 Hour Strength & Grace Yoga Teacher Training and 300 Hour Advanced Teacher Training.

Attitude

Through the philosophy of Anusara Yoga, I discovered an approach to engaging with life which gave rise to a new wave of personal transformation.

The philosophical worldview of Anusara Yoga is tantric. It describes everything in our experience as sacred and a doorway to the Divine.

Tantra invites us to see life as it is and connect with it fully, not rejecting or suppressing, but engaging with the full spectrum of experiences available to us.

Cultivating this attitude to life means we are better able to be in a good relationship with reality. Instead of struggling to swim upstream we flow with the currents of life.

As a yoga teacher, this life-affirming philosophy helps me to see the good in people. I endeavour to teach from the perspective that the student is already great.

Yoga is not about trying to become something or someone else. Rather it is about learning to appreciate who you are and understand how to work with what you have to be the best version of yourself.

Alignment

When we align our bodies, the mind becomes quieter. The quality of our thoughts changes and we become more emotionally grounded.

The alignment principles of Anusara Yoga have proven consistently to help people to feel physically and emotionally better as they gain confidence in their bodies and their abilities.

The system of alignment is highly effective and offers great therapeutic benefits. In a time of great injury and pain I was diligent in the practice of Anusara Yoga’s Universal Principles of Alignment (UPA) and succeeded in healing many of my injuries and avoiding hip replacement surgery.

As a teacher implementing the Anusara alignment principles, I am consistently able to help students move more deeply into their poses with increased ease, either to completely relieve pain and discomfort, or at least experience noticeable improvement within a single session.

I love how alignment helps students to understand their bodies, posture and asana practice with depth and clarity. It is wonderful to watch people gain access to and enjoy asanas that had previously been uncomfortable or had seemed impossible.

Action

Theories and ideas remain mere notions unless they are put into action. In other words, intelligent alignment principles and interesting philosophical concepts only become useful if taught with a high degree of skill that makes them accessible and applicable.

The Anusara teachers I studied with impressed me not only with their knowledge and expertise but also with their outstanding classroom skills. The education process to become a Certified Anusara teacher places great emphasis on teaching methodology.

The training, guidance and personal mentoring I received within my certification process took my teaching to a new level of competency and artistry. I rejoice in offering the same teaching methodology to the teachers who study with me.

Kula, our community, is the place where we put our yoga into action. It is the field within which we experience how yoga moves us towards more harmony, clarity, forgiveness and love. I am grateful to the community of teachers and students around me for their support and also for the lessons I have received and worked with to grow as a teacher and as a person.
